About this image to ASCII generator

ASCII art turns a picture into characters: every pixel group becomes a letter, a symbol or a braille dot, so the photo can live inside a chat message, a code file, a terminal window or a social media post.

This generator reads your image in the browser, resizes it to your chosen width and replaces each cell with the character that matches its brightness. Your photo is never uploaded, and the result is ready in under a second.

Features

  • Four styles: braille dots, blocks, classic ASCII and simple hash
  • WhatsApp presets for desktop and phone, plus a live fit meter in pixels
  • Equal width cells: every character is measured so the shape never skews in chat fonts
  • Width control from 16 to 220 characters
  • Brightness and contrast sliders plus an invert switch for dark photos
  • Copy, .txt and .png download in one click
  • Paste from clipboard with Ctrl+V, or drag and drop
  • Private: converted on your device, nothing is uploaded

Frequently asked questions

Is this image to ASCII tool free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you convert.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is converted inside your browser, so it never leaves your device.

What is the difference between braille, blocks and ASCII styles?

Braille style uses the dots of one braille character to store a small 2 by 4 pixel grid, so it shows the most detail. Block style uses box drawing characters for a solid, poster like look. Classic style uses plain letters and symbols, the traditional ASCII art look.

Why does the output look stretched or too dark?

Characters are taller than they are wide, so the tool automatically correct the height. If it still looks flat, change the width slider. If it is too dark or too bright, use the brightness and contrast sliders, or turn on invert for dark photos.

Why does my text art break when I paste it in WhatsApp?

A chat has a fixed line width, so a long line wraps and the shape falls apart. Pick the WhatsApp desktop or phone preset so each line is short enough, and watch the green fit meter under the preview. The tool also measures your fonts so every character has the same width, which keeps the rows aligned.

Can I download the text art?

Yes. Copy it to the clipboard, download it as a plain .txt file, or download it as a PNG image to share on social media.

Which image formats work?

JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP and SVG. You can also paste an image straight from the clipboard with Ctrl + V.
