About this password generator

Weak and reused passwords are one of the most common ways accounts get hacked. This free password generator creates long, random passwords that are very hard to guess, with the length and characters you choose.

Passwords are generated in your browser using its built-in secure random number generator. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is saved, so the password you see exists only on your screen.

Features

  • Secure randomness from your browser, with no bias in character choice
  • Custom length from 8 to 64 characters, plus a PIN mode
  • Pick your characters: lowercase, uppercase, numbers and symbols
  • Avoid look-alike characters such as 0, O, 1, l and I
  • Strength meter that shows the entropy in bits
  • One-click copy, and nothing is stored or uploaded

How to use the password generator

  2. Select which character types to include, or switch to PIN mode for numbers only.
  3. Click Copy and paste the password into your password manager or the sign-up form.

Frequently asked questions

Is this password generator safe to use?

Passwords are created in your browser with the Web Crypto random number generator. They are not sent to a server or stored. As with any password tool, use it on a device and browser you trust.

How long should my password be?

Aim for at least 14 to 16 characters for important accounts such as email and banking. Longer is stronger, and a random password of 20 or more characters is excellent.

Should I include symbols?

Symbols add strength, but length matters more. If a website does not accept some symbols, turn symbols off and increase the length instead.

How do I remember a random password?

You do not have to. Save it in a reputable password manager and use a different password for every account.

Why avoid look-alike characters?

Characters such as 0 and O or 1 and l are easy to mix up when you type a password by hand. Excluding them helps if you need to read a password aloud or copy it manually.

Is a PIN as safe as a password?

No. A PIN has far fewer possibilities. Use it only where a service requires numbers, and prefer a long password everywhere else.
